제1절 원소(제2801호 - 제2805호)

총설 :
원소는 비(非)금속과 금속의 두 종류로 분류할 수 있다. 이 절에는 적어도 어떤 형태이든 간에 모든 비(非)금속이 포함되지만 반면에 다수의 금속은 다른 호에 분류한다[예: 귀금속(제71류와 제2843호)·비금속(卑金屬 : base metals)(제72류에서 제76류까지와 제78류에서 제81류까지)과 방사성 원소와 동위원소(제2844호)와 안정동위원소(제2845호)].
적당한 분류를 표시하기 위하여 알려진 여러 원소의 일람표를 별표와 같이 제시하였다. 안티모니(antimony)와 같이 특정 원소는 금속과 비(非)금속의 두 가지 역할을 한다. 이 같은 점이 이 표 해설서 상의 분류에서 주의하여야 할 점이다.
