Bars and rods, hot-rolled, in irregularly wound coils, are defined in Note 1 (l) to this Chapter.
These products (also known as wire rod) are mainly used for drawing into wire (heading 72.17) but they are also used for other purposes especially in building work (e.g., as welded netting), in the nut and bolt industry, in the cold-drawing industry, etc., and for the manufacture of welding rods. The heading also includes bars and rods for concrete reinforcement; such products are rolled with protuberances or indentations (e.g., teeth, grooves, flanges), provided their general cross-sectional shape corresponds to one of the geometrical shapes defined in Chapter Note 1 (l). These protuberances or indentations must be designed solely to improve the bond with concrete, etc. The heading does not cover bars and rods of this kind, straightened and cut to length (heading 72.14).
